Report: Pope Francis led a Mass in Daejeon city that began around 10:50 a.m. Friday, marking the feast day of the Assumption of Mary.

During the Mass, the pontiff said that to gain true freedom, people must be free of infinite competition and materialism.

"I hope people will reject inhumane economic models that marginalize laborers and create a new form of poverty."

The pope traveled to Daejeon Friday morning on board the KTX, the country’s high-speed train. He was initially expected to travel to the city by helicopter.

For security, passengers were not admitted to three executive compartments directly connected to where the pope was seated. Still, some 500 passengers were in the regular cabins and traveled to Daejeon in the same train with the pope.

The pope rode in a Kia Soul from the train station to Daejeon World Cup Stadium. He then arrived at the stadium in an open-topped, white colored vehicle that was remodeled from a Korean made SUV.

Before the Mass, the pope met with ten survivors and family members of Sewol victims and consoled their pained hearts.

After a luncheon with key participants of the Asian Youth Day event to be held on Sunday, Pope Francis will head to Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province to visit the birthplace of Father Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Korea’s first Catholic priest.

At Saint Kim’s former home, the pope will meet with some six thousand Asian young people.
